Facebook Group: Turn the BEAD Around

A couple of days ago, I decided to start my own Facebook group. For a few reasons.  Blogging seems to have become a lost art form, one that has recently been thrown to the wayside by artists.  People are instead, using Facebook to network and form relationships with their customers and peers. It's quicker, easier than blogging. So I figured, what the heck. I might as well embrace it.

So I started a group. I called it Turn the BEAD Around, a play on words from a popular Gloria Estefan song from the 80s. The group is really low key, no pressure, and should be a fun place to hang out. There is always a small level of risk when forming a Facebook group. Because people tend to like to overshare, or share irrelevant things. So my group is monitored by me. All posts will go through me first.

What is it?
I hope it will become a place where people can share photos, promote their shops, talk jewelry and beads til the cows come home. I hope it's a place where I can post prompts- to initiate fun conversations about all things jewelry. I hope to do some fun bead giveaways there. I want people to feel comfortable asking questions about how to do certain things.  I won't be able to help with a lot of beadweaving questions but there might be someone that's a member of the group that can help!!

I want it to become a fun beading community that is free of judgement, free of stress, and a positive place to hang out and share stories or photos or videos.

  1. Hi Lorelei
I like the sound of this group, I have to say it's nice to have one where you can promote your shop, many groups don't allow this, which I've always found a bit strange.
I have to say since I opened my shop and made a page on Facebook just for my jewellery that is where I get a lot of traffic from, but I don't think I could ever give up Blogging, a lot of the time I do it for my self, I love to write and some times I just need to I find it Cathartic, you know?

    1. oh I'm with you totally. Love my blog, and would never give it up. And I do still really enjoy reading blogs. So I hope that blogging doesn't die totally. But what I love about the FB group is that, it's more interactive. I get more comments there than I do on my blog and I feel like it's easier to have conversations with people there too.

    2. I have never really had the blogging bug, but felt that I had to have one for my business. As a result, it is neglected...because my heart is just not in it. I agree with you, Lorelei, that I think blogging is losing its popularity. And I too feel like facebook is where the energy is right now. I also love the more interactive aspect of facebook.

  4. I hope that folks remember that not everyone is on Facebook. I've chosen not to join this social media and many contests, and the like assume that everyone is on Facebook. Please don't neglect the non-Facebook crowd. Good luck on this endeavor and I'll be a faithful blog reader.

  6. Lorelei - for my info and perhaps others - what will be the difference between your new group and Creative Bead Chat FB group for example? I want to spend my online time efficiently, as I tend to get sucked in socially and interest wise. I thought I'd just see if there are different appropriate topics of sharing that you see your new group filling. Thanks!

    1. I suppose the only difference would be that I will be more active in my own group. I rarely post things in the creative bead chat. But otherwise, I'm sure the topics will be similar. I may post things that you haven't seen there.

    2. That didn't make it any easier! LOL! Maybe I should dedicate one day to internet and swear off of it the rest. I'd get more work done that way. : ) I'm sure I'll be checking in to your group often. Best wishes!

  7. I am also one of your followers who hope that you won't stop blogging! :)

I prefer blogs due to several reasons. For one it seems that a lot of bloggers take more time writing their blog entries than the short and quite often for me too unpersonal facebook messages. True, it is faster, but a lot of informations are lost quite easily due to the layout of the time line. If I discover a new blog, I enjoy reading it completely (yes, takes a lot of time for some blogs ^^) and get a little bit to know the person, the inspirations and the work. Also the reason why I don't start following blogs that make the short cuts for their blog entries. If I have to open every single blog entry, I will stop reading in most of the times.

The other reason is that I don't like facebooks company strategy. Yes, I have an account. This is due to my family living all over the world and they use fb to stay in contact (I gave in after one or two years and also joined). But with now the second time in a few weeks that they stored and used personal data without consens I don't want to use fb more than I have to. The last one: The mobile app send all saved and send telefon numbers and conncetion on the phone to the fb servers. fb said they deleted them all now but I don't trust them anymore.

  8. I'm so glad you are doing both! Very important to have a Facebook group and a blog, in my humble opinion. Blogs are beautiful, internationally connecting publications and Facebook is about relationship. Nurturing relationships that sustain the professional has to be a good thing! I'm already lovin' your new FB group. Way to go!
