Update on Mer

My friend Dot Winchell made this and I have been laughing all afternoon. All joking aside though, Marley is doing okay. We tried to go yesterday to the vet. It was a nightmare. By myself, I struggled and could not get her into the cat carrier. She just cried and cried at me, with legs flailing everywhere. I tried luring her in with treats. She's smarter than that. I tried pushing her down in from the zippered top, but I knew I would hurt her in doing so. After a good 20 minutes, I gave up. We rescheduled her appointment for a Saturday so that Joe could drive while I hold her, wrapped in a towel or blanket. We'll get her there, come hell or high water. She may LOOK like the boss of me, but she can think again. ;)

She is acting fine. Had another burst of energy today at lunch and went ripping through the house like a bat outta Hell. Her appetite seems unchanged... but she has been drinking more water lately. That, paired with the small weight loss I'm noticing, worries me and I won't be at ease until I find out what is causing these changes.  Joe thinks I'm overreacting but agreed that a trip to the vet is necessary.  I'll let you know what happens and if I notice more evident changes before next weeks appt.,  we'll get her there sooner.
promise.

  2. Your Marley looks a lot like my Bertye, who is also 15, and lost a little weight lately, is more calm (aka sedentary) than she used to be and drinks more water than anyone else in the house. With her change in activity level, she lets me hold her more, so I like that aspect of it! I have not taken her to the vet in a couple years, so I'll be interested to hear how Marley makes out. Send good vibes to Marley!
The picture would make FABULOUS cocktail napkins!! lol!

  3. Oh. My. Goodness. I look at the picture and keep laughing. Sometimes words CAN really describe a look a pet has. LOL! I hope Marley is okay! I have an almost 14-year-old Maltese in the same situation. We're hanging in there for now.

  4. Your photo cracks me up! My dog Twila on the other hand loves going to the vet! She hops right up on the exam table, with her tail wagging, and then proceeds to lick the veterinarian while he tries examining her! He commented that she is the only dog he knows that likes coming to the vet!

Hope everything is ok with Marley. You are right to follow your instincts and if all is well, then you will have peace of mind knowing so.

  5. I hope she is alright. It may just be her getting older. That photo is too damn cute. Love the editing.

  6. Love that photo. I have been in the exact same situation when we've had cats. They really really do not like traveling, especially in a carrier. You'll get there. Thanks for the follow up on you Marley.

  7. We've had so many "carrier allergic" cats over the years that I haven't even purchased one for our two current cats. They get the blanket treatment, but I wonder if one of those sling-style baby carriers would be more humane? They could use it as a blanket and get their scent on it beforehand... I just love your friend's picture, Lorelei; Marley obviously holds a grudge for a long time! Hope her health is good and she is back to her old tricks before long.

  8. It would cost a lot more, but maybe you could get your vet to make a house call. Good luck!

  9. Cute pic. Sounds like Marley may have developed diabetes... There are other things that can occur when a cat loses wt too fast but we don't have to go into that right now. The vet will probably draw labs and that should tell them a lot. Hope whatever it is that it's treatable and that she's okay...

  10. Diabetes is very treatable in a cat, Lorelei, so if she does have it, it will not be the end of the world. My cat lived with it for well over 5 years, and we estimate he was about 16 when I lost him last spring. Oh, and Gimp was Marley's long lost grumpy twin.

I have had two csts (one still with us) with kidney disease. The water drinking in excess is an indicator...so is weight loss. They can treat it. Getting them to the vet is the hardest part...I always have to schedule mine on Saturdays so we can drag our Simon out from under the bed....Getting the cat to the vet is a two person job around here too!

Our kitty that is no loner with us had the disease for many years....lived to be 19.... My Simon is 15 and was diagnosed about 2 yrs ago....he is doing well with minor treatment including some diet modification.

Fingers crossed that she is ok...Deb

Check out Berger's Disease. It is a possibility with water drinking and weight loss. However, it is treatable with medication. I have a former colleague whose dog had it for a while.

  13. The pic is hilarious, editing genius! I have to agree that it could be as simple as diabetes, my sis's cat is an insulin dependant diabetic. The signs they saw were listlessness, heavy water consumption, weight loss and a change in coat. Wishing all three of you all the best on the vet visit :).
