Otto

Meet Otto. Named after the Syracuse Orange mascot, for it's brightly Orange colour. :)  He's a 1972 VW  Westfalia Campmobile
It's true. We found him in Pennsylvania and he's making the trip to upstate NY this coming Thursday. Joe surprised me on Thursday night with the news that he had applied for and was approved for a loan to buy a van. I guess all his internet research paid off. Otto is in really great shape. The owner had stripped it down to nothing and redid the entire body. Refilled it with all of it's guts but did new wiring, a new pop up, added a new cd/stereo and a DVD player/TV. The seats need a little TLC but at least it's not rusted out on the exterior.  Joe is already researching fun accoutrements, like a new wheel cover, and yes, I think to his dismay we will be getting rid of the disco ball that is hanging inside.
We are looking forward to having this beast for several reasons. It's really cool and we both love Volkswagen. I am looking forward to taking more trips in the Spring, Summer and Fall... And I love the idea of just being able to Go with now set plans and no hotel reservations! We will be able to attend family vacation at Cape Cod in July! I know the kids, Max and Alex will LOVE uncle Joe's new van.  I want to take up some mild hiking this summer and this will be perfect to take to the Adirondacks too. We've got big plans.  Sowing our Wild Oats. That's right. :)

You're going to love it! I would love to see photos of the inside when you get it....Mike would have us one too but we have an old Toyota RV that makes me feel like a homeless vagrant gypsy when I ride in it but it is pretty cool!

  2. Enjoy yourselves and make it your own.

Call your local library and see if you can get a copy of "Rolling Homes." This is a book featuring hand made rolling homes and should inspire you.

  4. How wonderful. For years I had a 1979 Campmobile bus, it was brown, and my daughter and I went camping in it when she was young. But now, since 2001, I've had a baby blue 1989 VW Westfalia Campmobile. I only went a few years in between without a Campmobile in the driveway, so watch out, they are addicting!

I think you'll love it. My 1989 blue version was in Dallas when I was in Kansas City, and I flew down, bought it sight unseen, and drove it around Texas visiting and then back to Kansas City. They are a HOOT!

My husband mostly drives the Blue Bus around town, and always gets comments - so be prepared with your snappy comeback when folks say - "Wow! That's So Cool!" when you are driving around!

Enjoy ... have fun ... take LOTS of pictures!

  11. Okay now you're bringing back serious memories! My childhood van was an orange VW - the one with the stripe. What memories. Our van went from CA, to Guam, to Germany, then back to Virginia - by then I was in college. Sure miss it.

  13. Beware. . .a friend of mine bought one of the first VW bugs when they re-introduced them. She said she spent the first year indulging former VW owners who had owned one long ago and just wanted to sit in one again, for old times' sake! You might want to put a roach clip in the ashtray to help those people have the full experience...
