Bead Soup Party Hop

Welcome to Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Party blog hop! I hope you enjoy your pitstop here at the ol' blog!
If you are a regular reader, you may remember that my Bead Soup partner is Kate Richbourg and she sent me a colorful collection of beads in the olive and reds color palette. You can see the beads here. And then you can see what I sent to Kate, here.
First up, the necklace. This week I have had Round Rabbit on the brain and so Nancy's beads snuck their way into my Bead Soup!  I layed out my beads on the mat and separated them by bead, little groupings.  I pulled the Round Rabbit Owl bead and love the matte finish and the deep rust color with the reds and greens that Kate sent.  He looks cute dangling inside the glass ring.

I had originally thought of putting the box clasp at the front but wasn't sure how I would get it to work after I had already cut 2 lengths of green waxed linen cording.  This further proves the point that I usually do fly by the seat of my pants in most projects. So the clasp ended up at the back.

I started knotted the beads up one side, and as I was working I thought it would be cool to let some of the cording show by having a multi strand section of knotted beads. Right above the ceramic stick (also Round Rabbit!), I started an overhand knot with the 2 strands. I wanted to add 2 more strands so before the knot was tied, I slid in another strand of linen cording to the halfway point and finished the knot off. Voila! Now I am working with 4 strands!

So once I finish this multi-strand section, I have 4 strands of linen cording that will not fit into my beads holes. I tied a tight overhand knot with all for strands, and just trimmed 2 of the strands close to the knot. and continued knotting beads up the rest of the necklace.

I had the large chunky faceted green stones left over and a few of the red beads too. So I created a bracelet using a large Pam Wynn focal, some spacers, 3 porcelain Round Rabbit rings, and an enameled connector from C Koop Beads. I cut a length of red leather, and created a sliding knot style closure. Loosen it up, slip it on and tighten it up by pulling the leather tails outward.

Here's a nice close up of Pam's bead. Love that Mokume Gane and the colors in this really are great with the green and red beads.

Here's a detail shop of the clasp.

I hope you enjoy my bead soup! Have fun blog hopping, here's the list of participating blogs!

  12. Wow, just wow. You are so creative. I cant believe you don't sit and plan but that is probably why you make so many pieces and why you do the amazing work you do. You sit in your room with the music on and just do. You don't over think it. I am starting to try to work more like that. It's not easy, to get out of your own head.
Anyway I love the owl in the circle, I love the bracelet! wow

It made to laugh to read that you had already cut the linen cord before deciding where to place the clasp. That is totally the kind of thing I would do!

  50. I am SO sorry for being late — today our internet provider decided to crash. My stress level is through the roof, to say the least! They’re still working on it, but it’s like dial-up.

LOVE how you used multiple strands of waxed linen on the one side of the necklace -- and dangling the owl in the circle (like he was hanging out in a knot hole of a tree) is cool).

I LOVE the polymer clay bead in the bracelet -- I have one of her postcards (have for years!) in my studio but have never had one of her beads and have no idea why not? I think I kept missing her at her booth.

All in all, well played, well done, and I love the colors.

    I hope you’ll participate again!

    Love, Lori

  56. Lorelei, the composition in your necklace is amazing. There are many elements that just jumped out at me - like the beautiful color palette. And the oranges...the addition of orange on either side, randomly is striking. And the knotting - what a clever design. You took an assymetrical design and really knocked it out of the park.
