Bead Blogger Round up

I have one more day off from work. It's been nice being away from the office for over a week now. Last week I was away in Florida and then the long 4 day holiday weekend after that. I wish I didn't have to go back. I'll have to be sure to make it count, tomorrow.

I really have been enjoying my time in the studio making pretty things. Here is a photo of one of the necklaces I created this morning. An asymmetrical, this and that necklace with some art beads, some stones, so of this, some of that.
My mind is blank for an appropriate title!

More Design Boards

We went to Anthropologie on Wednesday during our little Bead Date, and I got the itch to do a few more of these cute design boards, using some of Anthropologies' outfits, and my jewelry- which always seem to go hand in hand! Warning: This may make you want to go shopping!

A Beady Date with some Beady Friends

Check out this nice little slide show I created with the pictures from our day on Wednesday. Lisa Petrillo of Lucid Moon Studio, and Layne Dasher  of Layne Dasher Jewelry, came over to my B&B and we jetted off to a few of the local bead shops in Orlando. The first one, was not so great. The second one, The Bead Bar, was a real gem!! I got some great stuff, as you'll see if some of the last photos in the slide show. They had a nice selection of semi precious stone strands, and lots of Czech glass that was all 20% off that day! I loved that the shop didn't have a million "loose" beads. I would much rather buy a strand, and I think it's probably a lot cheaper to do it this way.

From there we went to this huge Millenia Mall, did a small amount of shopping, and then went for dinner at this cool restuarant  called Crave. You'll see my Macaroni and Truffle/Gruyere Sauce entre that I had. It was so decadent!! We enjoyed some really awesome conversation about everything Beads, Etsy, Family, IN-laws!, Copycatters, art beads, techniques, our favorite bead shopping sites, you name it! We covered every topic!!

If you ever have a chance to travel and get to meet someone you know in this nice friendly beading community, like I did this past week- I definitely recommend it. There is jusxt nothing better than getting together with women that share your own interests! I come to find out, that all three of us, don't really have local beading friends- and so we really relished the fact that we were able to spend some time together. It would have been nice if we had even been able to go to each of their studios and maybe do some beading too.  Hopefully, on the next trip!!

See pictures from slide show here in my picasa web album.

Bead Soup Arrived!

My partner in this round of the Bead Soup Swap, is Marianna Boylan of Star Girl Jewelry! I received Marianna's package as soon as I got back from Florida today and I am thrilled at the ingredients!! Marianna stuck with a color theme of a nice ocean blue color. She sent along one of her handmade ceramic Tree pendants, some of her own lampwork lentils, a few blueberry quartz beads, a small strand of pearls, some large Turquoise beads, and a cool Bali silver toggle clasp.  I can't wait to get started on this project!
Check out Marianna's Blog, where she shows a little teaser of the beads I sent to her.
Tune in the week of June 19th to see what all of the participants of the Bead Soup swap made with their swapped goodies!

kiss me hello

I am feeling
lucky
in love with my home, which i will see soon
in love with my husband, who I will kiss soon
fortunate for a job that allows me to travel
fortunate for my good health
lucky to have such fabulous online friends, and not-so-online friends.

but I am also feeling nervous for a flight
and anxious about my husband's health
hopeful to try to start a new healthful routine

refreshed.

see you when I get home.

Meeting new friends

Kelley, Me, Laurie

What a blast I had last night! I met up with Laurie Whitney of Mermaid Glass, and she brought along another friend, Kelley Kirk who also sells on Etsy at Gongy and Squish! Two girls, intelligent, crafty and FUN- we all got along smashingly and I can imagine we would be quite the team of 3 if I lived a bit closer.
We chatted about Etsy, and blogging, and crazy Etsy experiences. But also talked about our families and their kids, and one question that sticks out in my head, that Laurie asked me last night is, "How do you do it all, work, blogging, updating your shop, promoting your shop! How do you do it all!" And all I could say was " I don't have kids!" It makes a big difference. I really don't know how I could continue at this caliber if I had children. It'll happen eventually, and we'll cross that bridge when we get to it- but it just made me realize that this probably won't last forever, so I am going to enjoy the hell out of it while I can!

I am looking forward to my beady date this afternoon with Lisa and Layne. I think we'll have a blast- I will absolutely photograph the occasion.

Hope you're all having a great and creative week! Stay Cool!

New Clasps from a Favorite

Just wanted to give a shout out that Heather Wynn has some new clasps in her Etsy shop Swoondimples. I bought this one!! Squeeeeeeeeeeealing! It's so cute. I can't even stand it.

Go give Heather Wynn some Etsy love!

Relisted again

Good Morning!!
I had listed these lovely Lavender earrings  last week, and sold them the day I listed them. The buyer never paid for them, so I had to cancel the sale and I am relisting them in the shop today. I made some similar to this back for the earring swap. I think Rosanne picked them. I wonder how she's liking them....

Got a full day of work ahead of me. Looking forward to this evening, I think if it works out, I'll be getting together with lampwork artist Laurie Whitney of Mermaid Glass! She lives about 20 minutes from Orlando! Laurie makes beautiful glass beads, I would love to see her studio and the places that influence her work!

Then tomorrow, I am getting together with Layne Dasher and Lisa Petrillo for some bead shopping, and dinner. Can't wait for that! I hope that we can find some good bead shops that carry some unique goodies.

Hope you're  having a great week! Stay Cool!

Greetings from Orlando

I made it safely to Florida, and am getting ready for my first day of work. Probably going to a be a long day at the museum, and I hope my feet hold up in these shoes!  I am staying in the same room again this trip. It's really comfortable, and quaint. I love the area.
I took a pic of my new dress this morning- It's so pretty, a floral pattern that I was in love with at first site. And I got it at Target believe it or not! It's Converse!!! Go figure!

Florida looks good on me so far, but I haven't melted yet in the humidity. We'll see how today goes!
I am wishing I had brought a sketch book so that I can think about future jewelry designs but for now, I guess it's good to take a little bit of a break. Thanks to some recent sales, I am looking forward to going bead shopping in Orlando while I'm here. :)
Have a good Monday!!

Sunday Links

Joe and I decided to hang the little bird house that Maggie got me for my birthday, on one of the large oaks in front of our house, facing our front porch. I am hoping we get some permanent residents moving in soon! It's hung nice and high so none of the hoodlum kids can steal it and low enough so we can see it clearly while hanging out on the porch.

I am headed to Florida this afternoon. For some reason I am dreading it. I don't like to leave the confines of my house, that's the bottom line. I wish Joe was coming with me. I'll get through it... just have to get there, do my work, and hopefully have a little fun too. I am hoping to meet up with not just one online friend, but 2!! Hopefully it works out.  I'll keep in touch, bringing my trusty laptop with me.  No new jewelry for a while. When I get back, we are taking off to CT to my in-laws for Memorial Day weekend! But I just added a ton of new stuff to the shop so if you have to shop, you know where to find it.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend- make it count! I'll see you in a bit!

And the winner is...

The lucky winner of Bent, Bound, and Stitched by Josie Cirincione, is....

CYNTHIA!!

Congratulations Cyn- send me an email and get your address- I will mail your book ASAP!!

thank you again everyone for reading the blog and participating, and making my birthday week extra fantastic!

Jewelry for a change!

All this book stuff all week, I kind of miss showing off jewelry!! Don't worry, I'll be back again around 11 to announce yesterday's book winner.  I got into the studio yesterday and made a few pieces. I have a love affair going with chain/metal.

P1017667

Look at these delicious enameled discs from Anne at Gardanne Beads. I just ordered some more of these from Anne's shop this morning. I love how they look in these earrings. I could keep these easily, for myself.

P1017675

I pulled out my copper rollo chain from Rings N Things, and created this triple stranded necklace using some of Kelley Wenzel's glass rings that she had sent me. I like the fun and colorful outcome of this necklace. The 3 strands, and 3 beads, has that whole THREE'S thing going for it.

P1017700
I adore how this last necklace turned out. I layered one of Kristie's Artisan Clay textured donuts, with an old vintage brass coin also from Rings & Things! Wire wrapped with brass wire, and hanging from Vintaj brass rollo chain and then some large Vintaj cable chain. I added some wire wrapped sections of cornerless cubes and teal wood rounds. (hard to see in this pic)

Update... I leave tomorrow for Florida for work. I'll be gone til Thursday evening. I will keep my shop open, and will ship any purchases when I get back on Friday.  I will have my laptop and will continually obsessively check my email like always so you can also stay in touch while I'm away. It's such a lonely trip by myself, so please come and hang out with me on Facebook in the evenings, keep me company!!!

I guarantee that you'll flip through this book ooohing and aaahhhhing over every project! I had the pleasure of meeting author Mary Hettmansperger on the Bead Cruise, year before last. She's very down to earth, and you can see her passion for jewelry and metal, just but looking her in the eye! I am enamored by her skills and I know you'll love this new book that she recently wrote. Published by Lark Books, this nice hard cover technique book rocks as much as the next one. Covering a wide array of topics on Metal Clay, sheet metal, tools,  this book is a must have if you are thinking about getting into any metalworking. The projects are interesting, and unique- and they even look easy enough for me, the metalworking novice.  I really wish I had 50 of these books to give away but I'm afraid I have just the one.

Leave a comment on this post and tell me:
If you had a chance to meet Mary in person, what is the one thing you would ask her and why?

I will pick a random winner tomorrow, Friday, May 21st, around 4pm.
I will then announce the last book giveaway of the week!

Nicki of Nicki's Reef!!! Yippeeeeee! Congratulations!!

Two techniques that I have always been enamored with are Chainmaille and Beadwork. Why not combine them in designs! Cindy Thomas Pankopf shows you how in this nice soft cover technique book. 25 different projects highlight these two stunning designs in rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelet forms. Step by Step instructions are clear and the diagrams are readable and easy to understand. A great book to look through from inspiration! I love the alternative designs for each project too, gives you a whole new perspective on altering the basic technique.
All you have to do is Leave a Comment on this post, and tell me

- I enjoyed a nice evening out with my honey, and had a most excellent dinner and even have leftovers for lunch today!

-My friend Maggie bought me the cutest bird house on Etsy that I had coveted. I saw it sell out from my favorites and was so surprised when she gifted it to me yesterday! I can't wait to hang it up outside!

-Joe surprised me with this for my birthday gift!

- My mother made me the most beautiful handmade crazy quilt and gave it to me this past weekend! Isn't it just super! I love it, so happy and colorful!

-I bought myself these super cute Chaco sandals from Zappos, and can't wait to show them off.

The kick in the pants news:

-BeadStar did not receive any of my 5 emailed submissions, they are floating around in cyberspace unclaimed, unloved, unseen. So very sad about this. I was really happy to be able to put together a few pieces for 5 of the categories.  So. Now. What to do with them?? Submit them to something else? sell them in the shop? Hold em til next year's Bead Star? Give em away as gifts?   Update: This turned into a good thing afterall.... They were able to find my entries!

- A dear high school friend died from a long 3 year battle with Cancer. Makes the above bad news, not so bad afterall.

The front section is all about different tools and materials that you need to get started. Want to learn how to hammer metal? Cut with a saw? Instructions are clear and easy to understand for these and lots of ther creative techniques. I love how Candie formulated a book that can appease the metalworker and the beader, all in one!

Video Tutorial: Ribbon!

I had to break this down into 2 parts... Once you are finished watching part 1, the beginning of part 2 picks up right where I left off.  ENJOY! and PLEASE feel free to leave comments/questions!

warning: If you are one to get motion sick easily, you might not want to watch
this little video clip.

Yesterday I went home to see my Mom and family for the first time since Christmas. It's not that it's a long drive, just 2.5 hours, I guess I just got caught up in life and work and hadn't really made time to travel down there. I took the "back way" up over the hill to get to my hometown. It's a nice scenic route, with very little traffic. I took a bit of video ... was rocking to the music.

This is me and my baby Brother, Bren. He is the baby of the family and is 14 yrs old.

My sister Frances and my Moms

Here are some nice pics I snagged while I was home. We always have a good time when we get together, there was laughing and giggling and lots of rib poking.
 Me and Frances

I need to go home more often.  I went down to celebrate a late Mother's Day with Momma, and celebrate an early birthday for me. Did I mention my birthday is Tuesday? It's like my favorite day ever, I wouldn't want you to forget. :D

A fun pic of the 3 of us. First one ever, I think!!

I might add that this is the nicest picture I have gotten with my Mom, since my wedding in '02!  She's a sweetie my Moms.

Come on back again later (at 4pm est) to see a video tutorial on using ribbon in a necklace design. Plus the Weekly Blogger Links. AND Since it's my birthday week this week, I have some awesome beading books to review and give away. Lots of upcoming FUN on the Lorelei's Blog! :)

Getting to know youuuuuu......

Getting to know All about you..........

Here are some more answers to your questions from this previous post.  ENJOY your Saturday!

8. Did you go to Art School or College?  I went to a Liberal Arts and Sciences SUNY school in upstate NY, and studied art history, and museum studies. I only took one studio art class, drawing- and hated it. I excelled at essay questions on tests, and art history was just the ticket.

When or at what age did you know what you wanted to do? I knew I wanted to follow the museum career as soon as I started taking classes and working part time in the art gallery on my college campus.

Photography, any pointers or tricks of the trait? See question 1. USE YOUR  MACRO SETTING for nice up close pics!
How many years now have you been a Bead Artist? What's the one thing about beads that you like best? I have been beading about 4 years now. I think that finding new artisan made beads is my favorite thing about doing this. I love discovering something new, and then finding interesting and unique ways to use the beads!
If you couldn't work any longer as a Bead Artist what would you be doing? Probably just working my full time gig at the museum. And I would hope that if I wasn't beading, I'd be a mother, and of couse, be busy doing the mom/kid thing. And, I'd probably be all clingy to my husband which would probably drive him totally insane. I would probably cook more. Read more. Garden more. And my house would probably be MUCH cleaner.
Any advise that you would like to share with another beader? On beading? Follow your instincts, create your own voice, be confident in your designs, promote promote promote!
Do you feel any different that you're so well known and loved? Nope, I feel like a normal girl, with normal feelings, who enjoys beading and staying crafty. I certainly don't feel like a celebrity and typically feel baffled as to why so many people love me.
What do you do in your spare time? I normally spend time doing stuff I don't like, such as sweeping, laundry, grocery shopping. Ocasionally I force myself to go outside and garden, or take long walks with my husband. It normally takes a bit of coercing on his part.
Do you have children, if so, do they enjoy what you do? No kids yet. That's probably why I have so much time to do this!

9. How do you get the advertisers in the right column?
I offered ad space on my blog, so that bead artists could create their own little ads and I would display them to get them a little extra love and affection. So far, it's been pretty lucrative for them! If you're interested, send me an email!

10. Where does the owl fit into your signature piece?
Hmmm, my love of owls... started with Harry Potter movies. And slowly developed after seeing many cool art beads that feature them. Specifically the owl coin pendant, and Bubo owl beads from Green Girl Studios!  I also wonder if it might have to do with my Greek heritage. My Grandmother was from Greece, and she always loved owl imagery.

11. I was wondering where I can find on your site the instructions for making the bracelet on waxed cord that goes around the wrist a couple or three times and can be worn as a necklace. Saw it once a long time ago and never found it again.  I don't know that I ever did a tutorial on that piece, but I can do one! It actually was on leather cording. I'll jot that down for the next video tutorial!! Thanks!

12. I have the opportunity to buy Lindstrom tools - would you buy them? Yes or no, please explain. Yes! I recently bought a full set of Lindstrom pliers and they really are wonderful! Comfy! durable! attractive! COMFY! They are worth the $$$!

What kind of cord do you use the most? What helps you decide when you to use cord, chain, or beading wire? I like buying Waxed linen cording, I normally use brown but have been known to be spicy and use different colors.  I also like to use Leather cord, just brown. a 1mm-2mm size.  And beading wire- I normally use whatever I can buy at the local craft store, typically brass color or copper color in size .18 and a silver color in a size .18.  When beading, I just grab whatever I'm in the mood for- it's always really random!

Do you wear much of your own jewelry to work? What kind of comments do you get? I do occasionally wear my own designs to work, typically I wear bracelets, or long necklaces, and sometimes earrings if I have them on hand.  I get a few compliments, but I typically work alone or just with my boss, so the compliments are few and far between. I get more compliments when I wear other designers jewelry!

Almost forgot to BLOG!

P1017391
How can I forget to blog? Instead, I was worrying about getting to work on time, being able to list the lonely pair of earrings in my etsy store, worrying about what to eat for breakfast because I'm having this constant battle with myself about what I've been eating lately which is pretty much anything that isn't good for me... I was worrying about getting what I needed to get done this morning at work so I could take the afternoon off... worrying about what I was going to go get my mother for Mother's Day, since I am headed down to celebrate that in conjunction with my birthday (which is tues!) ... worrying about having enough time to get my eyebrows waxed, while I was at the mall- but ended up skipping it, so that I could sit down and eat a really bad for me Auntie Annie's pretzel.
So, blogging didn't happen til now. But I am kind of glad because now I have the opportunity to share a few things about my day with you.

#1. Kelley Wenzel sent me an early birthday gift, and had been anxiously trying to get me to get home to open it while I had her on the phone. The package was heavy, and stuffed so much that it didn't even shake rattle or roll. The squealing started immediately upon opening the box and finding this Lori Plyer clutch that I had coveted!! Oh.My.GOOOOODNESS! I couldn't believe it. And of course, Lori kept completely quiet and I had no idea that this was coming to me afterall. Nice Job Lori! I LOVE IT!!!

Inside the clutch was ALL OF THIS PLUS! some of Kelleys Egg beads!! and some spacers!  I ALMOST DIED! and then the tears started when I got to the Noisy Plume box. Because I ADORE everything Jillian makes and I couldn't believe I was even holding a box from her shop since things come and go in miliseconds when she updates her shop!  Kelley, you are the best. It's nice to be spoiled. It's really really nice, and I can't wait til your next birthday. I can't wait!!

Then I also got my new shoes from Zappos. I had ordered a different pair and when I got them, they just didn't fit right, so had to send them back. The bad part about buying shoes online!! But then these arrived and when I put them on, I swear I heard a gospel choir start singing in my head. They are Clarks. And they are my favorite. shoes. ever.

So with all this excitement, I don't even know what to do with myself. Joe is on his way home and then he'll be packing the car and taking off to Connecticut to help his Mother move into her new apartment which means I have the whole night to be creative, and I can stay up as late as I want to!  But I'll probably still hit the hay early, like 9pm anyway.

Hope you all had a great friday!

New Resin Bracelets, and MORE BEADS!

P1017377

My friend Tara came over last night and we played with Resin. She had never tried it before and so I showed her the ropes. She filled some shallow Vintaj Brass bezel charms with images she had found at home. I cut up some cute new scrapbook papers that I found last weekend, and filled these 2 bezel bracelets. I love how they turned out! I think I may be getting the hang of this resin thing. Maybe a video tutorial will be coming soon.
