A new Tool

I think I may be the last one on the planet to finally get one of of these doming sets. I found a fabulous deal on this large 21 piece set at Harbor Freight. I got it home last night and unfortunately had to wipe all the nasty greeeeeze off all the pieces, no one tells you about that fun task.

Anyway I have some plans on trying something new ...  Gotta get a few more things like tin snips and I'd like to get a nice quailty Disc cutter but not the $159 one from Fundametals cuz dang, I can't justify that. Even though it's wicked cool, and I would love it.  Know of a good place for a nice quality cutter, lemme know in the comments. I have looked in all the obvious places but I need recommendations.

I'm off to hang with Kerry for the day!! I am supposed to be pulling together some beads and tools to work with while I'm there, because we plan on doing some beading but I was so overwhelmed last night, and I still have no idea what to bring. Wish it was ALL Mobile!!    Keep your eye out on our blogs for a video sometime this weekend!  HAPPY SATURDAY!!

don't forget, read about the big Mother's Day sale going on in the shop til May 9th! I blogged 'bout it yesterday, WHERE YOU BEEN!!?!

  1. No, I would be the last one. But it's on my wish list. Maybe someday (sigh). Enjoy yours and I'm heading over to Harbor Freight.

Hello lady...congrats on the resin...go back to Harbor Freight they have a circle cutter that will work on lighter ga. metal. You need a good hammer, and a bit of muscle---but it works...amanda

  4. I totally agree about the packing - It is so hard to decide what to take. I never know what mood I will be in when I arrive at my crafting destination. Excited to see what you do with the new tools.

  5. Those dapping blocks are great! Someone told me about a pancake die from otto frei for only $18.00 (need a vise and some muscle to make it work) but I couldn't find a circular one,...only ovals and other cool shapes,....triangles, cactus, etc. Good luck!

  8. Cool! I have that set and love it..especially for that price. I would also like a disc cutter, and a jewelry saw, and ......much more :) I like using the tiny punches for stamping as well!

    Have fun :)

  9. With all this tool talk I have a question maybe someone can answer...Does anyone know if having a dremel for jewelry making saves you from having to buy a ton of tools? I've been thinking about buying a diamond bead reamer from beadsmith but if a dremel does the same thing with different bits than I'd rather only purchase one tool. Talk to me...I'm listening....

    Thanks.

  10. I have searched the HB site a couple of different times this week for a dapping set & it never came up. I am so glad you posted this today. Readers Digest magazine has 20% off coupons for HB in them too.

Look for a disc cutter from Pepe Tools... they're pretty reasonable. You can find them for decent prices at OttoFrei and at Contenti.

Also, I'd recommend a flexshaft over a Dremel-style tool any day of the week! Contenti sells an economy flexshaft setup for under $100. For comparison, the industry standard flexshaft is made by Foredom and runs about $200 for the whole setup.

    Have fun banging on metal!

Oh! I forgot to mention. If you sign up for OttoFrei's newsletter, they give you 5% and 10% off codes. I know it isn't that much, but that usually makes their prices the lowest of all the big jeweler's tool suppliers.

  13. I am on the list of do not have one of these great sets. Heck, I've even been to Harbor Freight to look at them. But it is on my list. Can't wait to see what you do with your set!

  14. Ok - my opinion.
Yes, I have the dapping set from HF. But for certain other tools you really want the best and HF is NOT the best place for quality tools - ask any good instructor.
Yes, I have a disk cutter, Pepe's, from Connie Fox. Found her to have the best price (on many tools, too) It's WONDERFUL.

  20. I have the same set up. When I worked with a master swordsmith, he said that when you're not using your swords... or in this case dapping block, it's important to rub them down with a light vegetable oil. You can wipe this off before you work with the tools, but while they're away and not being used, they should be protected. This will keep them from getting all rusty.

I can see where I missed spots on them now.
