Necklace Round Robin- Group 2

This second group of ladies includes me, Barbe Saint John, Kerry Bogart, and Mary Jane Dodd!
An equally fun group of designers, each with their own special personalities and designs styles! Unfortunately I forgot to photograph my necklace start for this group, so you'll have to wait until Kerry blogs about the necklaces in a few days! sorry! i know, I'm so lame!
This first one is Mary Jane's necklace. She started her necklace with some brass chain, a wire wrapped turquoise dangle, a soldered copper ring, and one of Beth's HINT charms with the image of a horse. I added a Jade Scott pendant that says "Kind Touch" and is a soft palette of pinks, yellows and purple colors. I attached a small purple vintage button inside the copper ring. I added a few links of larger cable chain in a nice copper color, and wire wrapped some beautiful opalescent rounds together.

Here is Kerry's necklace. Kerry created a longer style necklace with silver wired links and one of her large lampworked glass rings, and beautiful gunmetal chain, and teal blue silk cording. Interpreting the style of this piece was tough for me so this is what I came up with. I think it's really cool how open Kerry's piece was to interpretation!!

Barbe started her necklace with a lovely handmade double sided picture pendant, a deep red gem hanging below, and some darkened copper chain. I added little blue moonstone droplets below the pendant, each wire wrapped with copper wire. Up one side, I wire wrapped faceted Ruby Quartz rondelles, a black and white polka dotted lampwork glass bead from Kelleys Beads, and a faceted lucite bead in a deep chocolate brown (a bead that I got in London!)

I sent these out yesterday and Kerry got them today and was feeling so motivated and inspired, she's already added her additions to each! Next up on the list is Mary Jane. I can't wait to see what each of these talented ladies contribute to each one!

Necklace Round Robin- Group ONE

After I assembled the first group for the Necklace Round Robin, I decided to host a second smaller group of 4. That's why you see this post is titled Group 1. I received most all of the necklaces before my trip to London and then when I returned home, I received the final packages. Over the weekend I finally had a chance to make my additions to each one. What a talented group of ladies - I was so excited to work on each one. To leave room for the rest of group, I didn't add a whole lot to each one. But I enjoyed picking out different coordinating beads for each necklace. They are all so different in their feel! I love how individual they are!

Gaea created a fun and colorful longer necklace using red cording. Gaea hand-knotted little silver soldered jump rings at equal intervels and the pendant is made up of a hammered silver ring with one of her sweet sugar skulls dangling as a charm. It's hard to see in the picture what I added - a sweet red button charm, and a lampwork glass drop (Unicorne Beads) charm
on the large ring; and Vintage German glass paisley beads, and a faceted yellow jade bead, a red dice bead, and a small green ceramic house beads (Jubilee).

This neckace is from Mollie Valente. Mollie created her own resin filled copper pendant featuring a sweet bird image. Her color theme is pale blue, and rusty browns, and the theme in her necklace is wings. I created my own copper wire chain up one side, and added some more copper chain up the other side, with a wire wrapped button charm, and faceted amazonite rounds. I unfortunately didn't have any smaller sized wings to add to her piece, but there will be plenty of room for other designers to add wings since Mollie wants her necklace be a long 40".

Alison's necklace is a simple brass single strand piece, with brass wire, and wire wrapped rust color rounds. The focal is a beautiful deep emerald green stone set into a brass bezel. I used a lot of the beads that Alison sent along with her necklace including some green jasper ovals, and pressed glass leaves, and vintage glass bicones. I added a second strand to the necklace with darkened copper metal seed beads.

Nancy started her necklace with some of her own ceramic components, in rich teal and green tones. She created neat little links with wire wrapped around each with coordinating colors of seed beads. She attached the green ceramic link to the interior of a copper hammered ring.
I added Vintaj Brass jump rings and added some little pale blue glass rondelles onto the large jump rings. I also added a vintage brass toggle bar. To the copper ring, I added some beautiful embroidered blue and green ribbon that I found on our trip to London. (the glass rondelles also were bought in London!)

Emanda created a long silver cable chain necklace in which she added different wire wrapped beads, and religious symbols. I simply added a few more beads and charms at different intervals around the necklace- a copper cross, a silver flower charm, lampwork rings, copper wire wrapped crystal quartz cubes, and mauve colored pearls, and blue freshwater pearls.

Here is my necklace. My theme is birds. I started it with some chunky chain from AD Adornments. I added some brown waxed linen cording and hand knotted a few ceramic discs from Summers Studio, and a ceramic house bead from Jubilee. I wire wrapped a few dangles on the chain of a little silver bird and nest that Heather Powers bought me, and one of my favorite pewter bird beads from Green Girl Studios.

I can't wait to see what each and every designers adds to all the necklaces. I can't wait to see the direction each one will go in! What fun this is!

Workings for Tuesday

P1019550

This necklace look familiar? Probably not yet, but if you pick up the
newest issue of Stringing magazine, you'll see something similar to this
amongst the pages! I created this similar necklace for my Etsy shop.

P1019525

Itching to use my new leather ribbon from London, I put this necklace together last night.
The ribbon is silky smooth leather, in a dark navy blue. I used a pretty cool tulip pendant from
Jade Scott, some faceted lucite from London, and a GROW bead from Diane Hawkey.
I love the simplicity of this piece. It will be landing on Etsy soon, too.

Exciting news, I made my additions to the necklaces for the round robins (yes, there were two- I formed a smaller second group after I assembled the first group of 6) I am sending them all out to the next designer today, and will blog my additions once the next person gets them!
Aren't you excited to see them? You should be! They are sooooo beautiful!

I did most of the things on my to do list today. I am currently doing my laundry. I haven't even peeked into Joe's closet to see what kind of pile awaits me there....ugh. I don't wanna know.
I went to my friend Tara's baby shower today. What a nice time, she got so many great things, and they had such good food and games. I'm so excited for little Jillian to get here. I got her a Boppy pillow with little pink and brown birds on it, from Target. It was on the registry, but I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it.
When I got home about 4pm, I put together my custom orders, shown above. I had alot of requests come in the week before I went to London. It was crazy! I'm just glad I was able to put them all together. You may have seen some of these before.

The London Goods

london beads

Nancy and I had an agenda while in London, to find the most unique beads/buttons that we could. We headed out to Marylebone Ave where we looked high and low for The Button Queen. We found the old location, and headed up the street to the new address, and stumbled upon V.V. Rouleaux. A little trimmings shop that was as pretty on the inside as the outside. Rows upon rows of ribbons and cording, and things. We filled our hands with as many rolls of ribbon and cording as we could fit. Of course, I dropped a ribbon roll every 10 seconds. They didn't have little shopping baskets, and if I were to go back, I would make this suggestion to the clerk. Even though she was super grumpy to be working there.
So here in the picture above, is a small sample of what I bought there. We left, quite satisfied with our accidental find, and headed over to The Button Queen. A quaint and clean little shop with walls and books filled with buttons of any kind, new and old. Here are the buttons I found- some bone, horn, shell, bronze, plastic and metal. A little bit of everything. I like the horn shank buttons that remind me of an owl's face.
We then got back on the Tube and headed over to Covent Garden where we ate lunch and accidentally found the hard to find, Neal's Yard. A little alley way painting with pretty murals and colorful buildings, it opened up into a beautiful courtyard with restaurants, and people eating outside. This was where we found Bead Aura, a small bead shop packed full with strands and loose beads. I picked up some glass strands (upper right photo in collage) and Nancy found the coolest blown glass hollow beads in brown and green. I can't wait to see what she'll do with these. She'll show her stash over on her blog soon.
We also hit up the London Bead Shop (affiliated with Beadworks) where we stocked up on colorful and modern Lucite beads. Nancy found the cutest little ceramic bird beads, and again, can't wait to see what they end up in!
I'll leave links for Nancy's blog as soon as she posts some of her pictures.

London Slide Show

Hi! I'm back! I returned from our trip to London late last night. What a whirlwind!! I've never had 4 days fly by so fast in my whole life. I am not sure where to start, to tell you about my trip. I can first start by saying, we had a wonderful time. Nancy and I are a real team and she's the best person to travel with. Even though she ended up being in control of the map the whole time, she did a fabulous job getting us around the city! We didn't even end up getting lost once! I can only imagine what would have happened had I been the one in charge of navigating. We'd probably still be on the Tube somewhere trying to find our way back.

I don't want to bore you with a lot of details... here are the most important points.

1. I learned that the food in London isn't really that great and it was proven by a very grisely hamburger across the street from the St. Paul's Cathedral. ick.

2. The best food was found at a pasta place down in Covent Garden. We enjoyed some pasta dishes that were so awesome, we went back again and had the same thing again the next day.

3. London is the cleanest city I've ever been in, including the subway system. Even the tracks were clean!

4. It was extremely easy to get around. The tube is the best when it comes to traversing the city. My one small bit of advice if you ever go there, get an Oyster card for your stay- the other Travel cards never work. Just ask Nancy.

5. There is a Starbucks on every corner. Several times during our stay, we felt like we were really in NYC. The two cities are quite similar.

6. The staff at the Mercure hotel probably were relieved that we left yesterday. I was kind of a high maintenance guest with many many requests.

7. Nancy and I definitely recommend doing the Jack the Ripper walking tour while in London. What a blast! And if you can, request Chris as your tour guide, he rocked!

8. The majority of our London purchases were Ribbon, Cord, Leather, and Buttons. Also purchased Lucite beads, some glass strands, a very cool leather Madame butterfly belt, a funky ring, and a souvenir for my sister. I'll show these in the next post.

9. V.V. Rouleaux is the best place to buy trimmings in London, as long as you can stand the grumpy clerk that works there. Hrumph.

10. There are barely any large bookstores in all of London, since their large Borders closed down. We walked for miles looking for some magazines, and never found a single british beading magazine in our seaching.

11. There is a lot of development going on in London right now and many many large cranes that were used in building up new skyscrapers along the Thames River. This made for difficult picture taking.

12. They don't believe in air conditioning on the subway. This makes things awkward when a really really hot guy on the train is trying to help 2 girls get from point A to B when there is a lot of stinky sweaty smells in the air, and we are crammed into a car like sardines and face to face with said hot guy. Yes. very awkward indeed. just ask nancy.

Well, that's it for now. I'll post more about my trip tomorrow.

Gettin' on a Plane

Wish I could fly

Getting on an airplane is always stressful for me. And this trip to London is going to be hella long. I mean, almost 8 hours long. Luckily I will have some distraction. Bought 2 new games for my Nintendo DS. For those of you who are new to the blog, I am a video game junkie. I love 'em. It runs in my family. I bought Scribblenauts, which looks hilarious. You solve puzzles any way you want by typing in words. For example, there's a little guy, and a tree, and a star is in the top of the tree. You have to use your imagination to get the star. Write Ladder, and a ladder appears, you climb up and get the star. You write Beaver, and a beaver appears, chews the tree trunk, the tree falls, and there is the star, within reach. Well, you get the point.

Sometimes it's the little things that humor me. ;)

Check out the new bracelet now listed in the shop.

I will try to Vlog while in London, bringing the laptop so I can keep up on my blog reading, and keep you up on what's going on in London. Should be fun, so stay tuned! I won't be shipping any jewelry until I get back, but my shop will stay open. Check out the sale section, I marked a few new things down yesterday afternoon.

HOME.

P1019301

My husband wrestled this intact acorn branch from one of the local squirrels.

Okay, well not really but he did scare Mr. Squirrel away so that he could get an idea of what it was that he had. I saw him from the kitchen window while I was washing the dinner dishes. It looked so odd, this squirrel with this giant (ok not so giant) green blob of a thing.

Ok, so I didn't have my glasses on. I told Joe, Go out there and see what that squirrel has.Joe brought this cute little branch in and said HEY, this would be a good photo prop!

My guy, he's always thinkin'!

Anyway, this little bracelet is a nice little reminder of home. It reminds me of my tree and house lined street. The Squirrels that live in the neighborhood. The way each little house sits all pretty in a row, each complimenting the next. I love being at home. I love my house. And I'm thankful for it every day.

Bead Cruise Top Ten Reasons

Time is running out for you to sign up for this year's Bead Cruise. Beading on the high seas, you can't beat that. If it wasn't for some prior engagements, I'd be there. You should definitely reconsider if you've decided against it. The boat leaves from Port Canaveral, FL January 17 and heads out to Cococay, Bahamas; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Maarten and then back to FL. Take beading classes with some greats such as: Margie Deeb, Mary Hettmansperger, Barb Switzer, Beverly Herman and Melanie Brooks.

Here are the top ten reasons you should join in on the cruising fun.

A new twist for Bead cones

Who says you have to use bead cones on multi-strand necklaces? Why not try to use them in an unconventional way. For example, in this necklace, I feature Elaine Ray's glazed cones in the front of the necklace, strung like beads on beading wire, with a big ceramic barrel in the center (from MA Carroll) along with some bronzite rounds and lampwork spacers (Studio Rent).

All in a days work

It was like I was frantically trying to get it all in, as much as I could, in one day. So that the rest of the week I can concentrate on other things. I should never have said that I wouldn't list things all week. I'm already regretting that statement!
How bout I just leave it open, like I might or might not list new things this week. Then there's no pressure and no one is anxiously waiting to see what will be posted.
I am having a blast making these rings. I really could wear any one of them and be pleased as punch. I made some custom pieces too. And I tried to oxidize copper chain, using the hard boiled egg method, but it did nothing but make my chain spotty and stinky. blech.

So anyway, here's what I created today. I hope you like them!

Collages

London Here we come and the Bead Bloggers round up

Not sure if you were around back then, but last year around this time, I went to New York City for a courier trip for work. I invited my friend Nancy along. We had a blast! Read the post!

My connection with Nancy is kind of cool. I met her online through Etsy. But she lives in my home town! Anyway, Nancy is my favorite travelling companion. She's super easy going, laid back, and keeps me sane and not a total stress case while I'm traversing a city I've never been to. But not only that, she's a fun person to be around. We laugh, and we joke, and we talk about Etsy a lot which is nice too!
Nancy will be joining me on another fun filled courier trip, this time to a much further land...one across the seas. LONDON. We arrive in London, one week from today. We will be arriving separately and will meet up at our hotel. I am a nervous wreck, of course. I am like the worst traveller and extreme worrywart. But I am looking forward to seeing Nancy and exploring the city. Oh yea, and there's a little bit of work involved too.
Being that this week will be full of panic, packing, and trying to remember everything, I may not be listing new jewelry in the shop this week. I'll keep the shop open of course, and will do my best at blogging. (I'll announce the winner of the Hearts giveaway Monday morning) But I think this might be all I can handle for this week.
I promise to share lots of cool pictures from our trip when we get back home. We will be in London Sunday through Tues, returning home on Wednesday. A short jaunt, but we will do our damndest to see as much as we can while we're there. Neither of us has been to London before, so this will be a real treat. If you have any suggestions on food, tourist hotspots, or the like, leave a comment!

Ring a Ling

...Happy Saturday!
I went to Michael's this morning to get some tissue paper and a few gift boxes to hold me over. That's really all that was on my list. But when I walked in and saw the completely revamped, restocked, reorganized, and FANTASTIC bead department, I couldn't help myself! Have you seen it!?? I think our bead section has been decent in the past but this new department, now called - the BEAD CORNER- is really cool. Lots and lots of new strands of semi-precious gemstones (good in a pinch) and several new lines of jewelry components. I picked up some really interesting chain, and also found these cool ring blanks. Came home and put together 2 rings to start.

The first one is a Blue Seraphim lampworked wavy disc behind a Vintage Burgundy button. Cool color combination, great for Fall. I wired the button and disc onto the blank with some inexpensive artist wire.

The second one is a Mamacita Beadworks Mum button wired onto top of a Vintage shell button. A neutral color combination but modern also with the mix of brass and pewter. These are really fun, I like them- and yes, they are going into the ol' jewelry shoparoonie.

They are big but not really oversized. A nice statement ring.

And in the Fall issue of Stringing, you'll find 2 of my necklace projects, and a few earring designs and bracelet design feature work from Jade Scott, Loupiac, Pam Wynn, and The Orange Bell!

Almost 800

I am only 3 sales away from 800 sales! Be my 800th sale and I'll send you a free gift with your order.

The results of a day in the studio

P1018876 This first piece may look simple but the asymmetry of it sings to me. The green vintage button at the top left, was transformed into a fancy hook clasp, completely on the back and invisible. Simple loops of carved amazonite, pressed glass, and a faceted green jade round pull out the colors from the Jade Scott pendant. The little pewter Mamacita Beadworks button was wired inside of the large Vintaj Brass jump ring. Solid cable chain continues up the right side.

P1018929
Celebrating the last days of summer, this bracelet was created around the sunflower clasp from my friends at Green Girl Studios. I used brown waxed linen cording and hand-tied red bahay seeds, silver spacers, a Jubilee ceramic flower, Frosted green lampworked ring from Cindy Gimbrone, and a pale blue transparent lampwork round in the center from Loupiac, an orange and red fancy encased lampwork bead from The Orange Bell, and a faceted Pacific Blue faceted Swarovski crystal.

P1018909
This new owl bracelet was created in the same fashion as a previous DREAM bracelet that I made a while back. Dream bead and owl bead are both from Diane Hawkey. The Lampwork glass bead is from Magdelena Ruiz. Thai silver round, bead caps, and ceramic green round- all wire wrapped onto galvanized steel wire. I hand-crafted the heart clasp out of steel wire and then hammered it on the block to strengthen it.

P1018946
This bracelet was made for one of my customers. Tamera sent me these beautiful lampworked glass rounds and bicones, from Picking Weeds. I added a lampwork glass bead in the center from April of Bos Beads. The large ceramic ring is from my friend Nancy at Round Rabbit. I added on a cool clasp from Tim Holtz that hooks onto the ceramic ring.

P1019011
Holding onto memories of my days at the beach this summer, here is an ocean inspired necklace that features a ceramic pendant from Erin of Every Heart Crafts. Teal pearls, glass drops, metallic painted wood rounds, a Picking Weeds lampwork round, chips of agate up around the back, a really cool Sting Ray clasp from LeAnn Hartman, fire tree seeds, pealr sticks and a burgundy coin pearl. Asymmetrical design and beautiful calming colors make this piece a fun and funky addition to anyone's jewelry collection.

TGIF. I'm looking forward to the weekend. Aren't you?

Playing along- Kandinsky's Muse

Although I am now officially a contributor to the Art Bead Scene blog, I cannot officially play and win the monthly challenges but I am encouraged to play along anyway! I created this bracelet in the spirit of Kandinsky's No. 23. The colors are found in the painting- rich burgundy, orange, yellow, and the lampwork glass beads mimic the dots and lines in the painting. The golden glass drop charm adds to the color palette nicely. I created a clasp using a drilled stone connector. You loosen it up, and then pull the leather pulls to tighten it.

only human

I usally try my best to keep the blog nice and neutral, and business oriented about jewelry. But I think it's important for there to be connection between the reader and the writer. That's kind of why I keep the blog, right!? But it's easy to get caught up in the business and forget that I'm only human. It becomes kind of robotic where every day blurs into the next and all of a sudden I've realized 2 years has gone by and nothing has changed.
Here's where it gets personal. If you'd rather only read stuff about beads, and jewelry, and Etsy right now, you might want to jet. Today's not the day. Today is the day where you'll realize that I'm human. Regular ol' person just like you and you and you and YOU.
I think it's also important to say this. I am not looking for comments, or lots of support. I'm only looking for a connection. For that moment when a person reading this thinks, hey- I can relate to that. No comments are necessary. Ok. L. get on with it.
We have been trying to get pregnant on and off for 4 years. That's a really really long freakin' time. Now we've started really trying again. We ended up taking some time off and now we've done some tests and everything is normal so we are trying it out again. But now I've turned into a raging lunatic. How does this happen? Trying to get pregnant isn't supposed to make me completely crazy.
I've started to concoct scenarios in my head about symptoms that I'm having that could or could not mean that I might be. pregnant. That alone, could make a person crazy. Like this weird insatiable hunger I've had for 4 days. Even after eating, I'm hungry an hour later. (in my head, this could only mean one thing. is this true? Of course not. I know this.) Or, how I kind of felt for a few days like my pee was really super strong. or like I might be getting a UTI. Do you want to read about that stuff on a jewelry blog? No of course not. But I'm only human!! These are thoughts I'm having. I've completely lost my mind. And am resorting to typing it out as a way of therapy. It's helping so far.
All I know is, having a baby is scary shit. Are we ready? I think so. We aren't getting any younger. I just want to be a mother. That's all. So I would really appreciate it if the Gods above could grant me this one wish because I can't really be this childless, obsessive, crazy, lunatic beader any longer.

A Lynn Davis kind of day

My friend Lynn Davis sent me some goodies recently and I was able to put them into some jewelry over the weekend. I wanted to show you the outcome. This first piece is a necklace that I created around the glass Egg soldered pendant that Lynn made. The pendant is double sided which is so cool because you can wear it both ways. I dangled some charms off the bottom wire curve- A Humblebeads egg, a Green Girl Studios pewter bird charm, a wire wrapped brass tube and Kiwi jasper dangle, and a wire wrapped bright green chalcedony briolette.

Here is the reverse of the pendant- you can get a good view of the charms in this picture. The color is amazing. I love the look of the bright teal blue against the aged wood. I went out to my backyard, and Joe put a couple nails into my neighbor's fence so I could photograph against it. They are getting ready to rip the fence down to rebuild a new composite wood fence. I'll be a little sad to see this nice aged wood good. I might be able to ask them to save me a couple of boards.

The rest of the necklace is beaded with aqua glass beads, green glass briolettes, and white Panya nuts. I created a hook clasp using a fun vintage white and navy plastic button, and dangled a raku teal lampwork round from Blue Seraphim.

The second piece I used was one of Lynn's pewter wing connectors. This particular component is so versatile and looks great in necklaces but also looks great in a bracelet. I paired the wing with some twisted metal chain, and placed an asymmetrical cluster of beads - crystal quarts rounds, Faceted Labradorite, a Humblebeads disc bead in teal, an aqua pressed glass coin, and faceted Czech glass rondelles. A teensy taste of red in a small faceted ruby hides in the bunch too.

I dangled a tiny silver heart off of the wing, and created the hook clasp by hand-forging some steel wire.

I highly recommend Lynn's components if you are looking for something special and unique for your jewelry designs. Her pieces are well made, strong and durable and creative!! Check out Lynn's blog for more her thought processes behind the beads!
