Fun Colorways

P1018679

I don't normally work with lots of different colors in one piece of jewelry. I tend to keep it safe and stick to earthy tones, lots of green and browns. But yesterday I stumbled upon the work of Linda Bayer Lawrence and fell in love with color. Linda is a fantastic jewelry designer. I admire her designs equally as much as I admire her lampwork glass beads. She really is quite amazing. Check her Flickr pics out, you'll see what I mean.

I was inspired by her use of color and created this funky and colorful dragonfly necklace. I had no starting design, but just started pulling things together blindly. First starting with Nancy's ceramic ring at the front center. Everything kind of played off that. Next came the dragonfly toggle. Heather Powers had sent me these dragonflies eons ago and I never knew how to use them until now. I like the outcome. Dangling below the ring is a Golem Studios charm and a little teensy tiny Bird charm from my friend Beth at Hint.

I used various beads in glass and ceramic for the necklace. Lampwork from my friend Kelley, Gardanne Glass, Blue Seraphim. I used a large ceramic ring from Chinook Jewelry and attached some pale green silk ribbon that I found at Bead Fest. The floral ceramic bead on the ribbon is from Marti Conrad.

Celebrating the last days of summer... I hope this necklace speaks volumes of color.

  1. I love this necklace. Very well done. I work with lots of color in my signature designs so this perfectly my style.
I like that you use so many different art beads in one piece.

  3. Yep it is- it's one of her mini charms.
Guess what just happened though, it's so sad! I took the necklace up to the studio and dropped it and the ceramic ring from Chinook broke in half! damn!!! I put a teal on instead. it worked out, but how sad!

  7. I love the necklace! I'm always drawn to asymmetric work, and have tried to do it, but being sooooo Type A, it takes me ten times as long to make anything!

If you like bright lampwork, you should also check out Kerry Bogert, Carter Seibels, and Sarah Moran -- they have AMAZING things. I can't bear to part with their things, I tend to hoard them all!

  10. This has to be one of my favorites of yours - I tend to gravitate towards bright colors; they make me smile. I echo Pretty Things - Sarah's and Carter's lampwork beads are impeccable - along with Kerry. Other greats are Heather Trimlett, Jill Symons, Ellen Black, Hobo Glass and Grover Glass.
    Yes, Linda Lawrence is another...
Can you tell I 'collect' lampwork beads - LOL!!
